STORES HELD UP.

(Our Own Correspondent.)

Canton, July 26. When the Kinshan arrived this afternoon, she carried into port a quantity of stores consigned to military headquarters. An offi- cer armed with credentials went to the steamer's wharf, and gave orders to a gang of coolies to start loading the supplies into a sampan for conveyances to the military storehouse. At this time, the pickets of the striking Seamens' Union made their appearance, and refused to regnise the validity of the credentials shown them, and when the military officer in- sisted on removing the goods placed his eight coolies and the sampan woman under arrest. They were led away to the head- quarters of the union. At about 5 o'clock a motor car pulled up before the door of this building, and several military officers got out. When your correspondent came away some time later from a near-by point from which he stood adjacent to the union headquar- ters, a discussion was evidently still going on inside, and the men had not been as leased.

yet re-

strikers,

The boldness of the and the inability of the govern- ment to adequately cope with such situation is thus plainly shown.j More than oge policeman saw the incident at the wharf, but inter- ference was the last thing that they thought of. They simply re- fused to have anything to do with the affair, and turned their backs on it.

COMMANDER RESIGNS.

labour

Canton, July 27. The Canton Government has given orders prohibiting the labour unions from using Red flags, which were formerly very popular among the unionists. All the unions belong- ing to the Canton Workers Con- gress adopted the red colour. Since the anti-Red coup, most of the unions have changed colour and it is now ordered that the white and blue of the Kuomintang should be used.

General Tang Shi-chang, the Garrison Commander of Canton, has tendered his resignation. The office has been offered to Gen- eral Chan Chai-tong, commander of General Li Chai-sum's 11th Divi- sion.-A Correspondent.
